Whether drizzled in ketchup, sprinkled with salt or slathered in vinegar, a good bag of oven chips is a wise item to keep in the freezer. Not only are they great with battered cod, they can also be loaded with cheese for a nostalgic treat, or simply sandwiched in a chip butty.
What are the best oven chips?
Thick cut and chunky for pairing with steak, or elegantly thin to serve with salads? Cook from frozen or fresh from the fridge? We've found chips for every budget, to go with every cuisine. And although you might have thought the branded buys would come out top, it was a budget bag seasoned with beef dripping that impressed our panel the most...
Which are the healthiest oven chips?
Sadly, oven chips don't count towards your five-a-day. However, they do present a healthier alternative to chip shop chips, as they are lower in fat than their deep-fried counterparts. If you're in the market for healthy oven chips, look out for those that are made with minimal ingredients, such as these from Strong Roots. How we testOur panel of 10 taste testers sampled 11 varieties of oven chips, from fresh frites to frozen chunky chips. They were looking for those with a crispy, golden batter and a soft, fluffy middle. Ketchup at the ready, these are the ones we recommend.

Best oven chips
ASDA Extra Special Skin On Beef Dripping Chunky Chips 750g
Score: 85/100
Prepared with British beef dripping, these restaurant-quality, thick-cut chips smelt just like freshly baked jacket potatoes. The rich golden-brown skin gave way to a soft, fluffy middle, and although the beef dripping wasn't overly strong, our panel thought they'd make a great addition to a juicy steak, or dipped in a rich sauce.
2
Runner-up oven chips
Aunt Bessie's Homestyle Chips 900g
Score: 84/100
These classic golden oven chips are made with sunflower oil and are naturally gluten free. There was some variation in size, but most were a medium thickness with a crunchy texture and fluffy middle, with good seasoning. A family favourite, this is a handy freezer filler to have on standby.
3
Best for couples
Tesco Finest Chunky Chips 449g
Score: 83/100
For when only chunky will do, Tesco's fresh, golden chips get our vote. Nicely seasoned with a nostalgic oiliness, our panel praised the crunchy outer and pureed potato middle. This pack serves two and can be frozen if you don't manage to eat the lot in one sitting. Top tip: you'll often find this side included in the Tesco Finest Meal Deal for two.
4
Best budget oven chip
Aldi Specially Selected Chunky Chips 1.5kg
Score: 75/100
If you're feeding a large family, a bumper bag of budget chips is an essential freezer staple. These are made with British maris piper spuds, and are cut to extra-thick dimensions, with a smooth, mash potato-esque middle, similar to a croquette. However, they were a touch pale for our liking, so you might want to leave them in the oven for a little longer to achieve that golden glow.
5
Best for crispy bits
McCain Home Chips Straight Cut Frozen 1kg
Score: 73/100
McCains is arguably the biggest name when it comes to oven chips — but what did our panel think of them? The inconsistent sizing meant that some achieved a perfect shade, while others were a little more brown and got stuck to our baking tray. Still, this made this pack feel more homemade, and ensured everyone got some crispy bits.
6
Best triple-cooked chips
Sainsbury's Taste The Difference Triple Cooked Chips 400g
Score: 73/100
Picking up the same score as our big branded buy (above), Sainsbury's has opted for the triple cook method. Short, fat and stubby in shape, we liked the rough rugged batter but found they were quite anemic after the designated cooking time. So, although this meant they weren't the most appealing initially, the taste more than made up for that. Well-seasoned and deliciously salty, they reminded some of Chinese takeaway chips.
7
Best frites
Waitrose & Partners Frites 300g
Score: 73/100
Made from British potatoes, these thin cut french fries are pre-coated in sunflower oil to help stop them stick. Cooked from chilled, they take just 18 minutes from packet to plate and are pleasantly seasoned (although we'd probably opt for a touch more salt). Lighter than regular oven chips, we think these make an elegant addition to steak, pizza, salads or BBQ food.
8
Best chip shop alternative
Morrisons The Best Chunky Chips 1.5kg
Score: 72/100
Smelling sweet and inviting, we were impressed by the crispy, golden colouring on these chunky chips (although some were more brown than others due to the variation in sizes). Properly crispy on the outside, you can hear the crunch as you bite into them. Satisfying and comforting, these substantial spuds make a pretty convincing chip shop chip replacement.
9
Healthiest oven chips
Strong Roots Proper Chips 650g
Score: 72/100
Oven chips probably aren't the first thing that spring to mind when trying to eat healthily, however these skin-on spuds are made with just two ingredients: British potatoes and sunflower oil. Low in sugar, salt and saturated fat, they contain just 110 calories per portion and come in recyclable packaging. But do they taste any good? Our panel liked the natural appearance and real potato flavour, but found them quite pale and not quite as crispy as they'd like.
10
Best classic oven chip
Co-op Irresistible Thick Cut Chunky Chips 400g
Score: 70/100
Although not a replacement for chip shop chips, these are a solid oven chip, with a soft and creamy middle. Some of the smaller ones cooked quicker than others, so expect a few crunchy surprises.
